Translating art history into seamless and circular knit.

A textile series that bridges art history, advanced knitting technology, and material research -translating the language of painting into contemporary seamless knit. The work draws on 17th-century Dutch female painters, whose sensitivity to colour, surface, and depth resonates with the studio's approach to material.

The challenge
How do you translate the depth of a painting - hundreds of colours, layered surface, tonal nuance - into a knitted textile? Taking the still lifes of Rachel Ruysch (1664–1750) as a starting point, the studio set out to carry painterly complexity into seamless, circular knit, without losing the richness of the original.

The approach
A single painting holds hundreds of colour variations. Using a custom AI-assisted colour-analysis tool developed in-house, high-resolution details were studied pixel by pixel and distilled into a workable six-colour yarn system. From there, colour was translated into structure through machine setup, stitch programming, and material experimentation - digital tooling and hands-on craft working together. The resulting textiles are soft yet sculptural, with layered surfaces that echo floral composition, shadow, and depth.

The result
The collection includes seating pillows, cushions, and a carpet/wall-hanging. The seating pillow forms part of Fondo Letto in Metamorfosi, a sculptural bench designed by Sven Wenting, where form, comfort, and material narrative intersect. Developed with Sordile, the series debuts at Maison & Objet 2026 - continuing the studio's exploration of how advanced knitting technology can support human-centred design, material longevity, and cultural storytelling.
